Cultured pearls are formed when an irritant, such as a small piece of mantle tissue or a mother-of-pearl nucleus, is inserted into a mussel or oyster. The mussel begins to coat this foreign body with layers of mother-of-pearl to protect itself, thereby forming a pearl over a period of months or years. The quality of the pearls depends on the thickness and number of mother-of-pearl layers, the uniformity of their shape and the smoothness of their surface. Cultured pearls can come in a range of colours, from classic white through to pink and black, depending on the type of shellfish and the conditions under which they are cultivated.

Cultured pearls consist mainly of aragonite, a crystalline form of calcium carbonate, and an organic substance called conchin, which together form the nacre. This mixture gives the pearl its unique lustre and texture. From a scientific point of view, the layers of calcium carbonate refract light, creating the characteristic shimmer and lustre that make pearls so sought-after.
