Organic acetate

What is organic acetate?

‘Bio-acetate’ is a neologism coined in marketing to refer to cellulose acetate.
In recent years, a well-known manufacturer has succeeded in replacing the proportion of fossil-based components used in the production of cellulose acetate with additional organic components. As a result, the overall proportion of organic raw materials has increased by around 7 per cent. Whilst this is, in principle, a welcome development, cellulose acetate has not yet become a fully eco-friendly product as a result.

Unfortunately, some retailers and online shops are exploiting this development to now label cellulose acetate as ‘bio-acetate’. However, this labelling constitutes greenwashing and deliberate consumer deception.
The term ‘bio-acetate’ is derived from the word ‘bio’, meaning ecological and organic, and thus suggests a completely natural and ecological composition. However, given the current state of technology, this is not the case, as cellulose acetate still contains fossil-based components.

We hope that cellulose acetate will one day be produced entirely from organic and natural materials. However, until this is the case, we have made a conscious decision not to use the term ‘organic acetate’. We reject the use of ‘organic acetate’ as a form of greenwashing and dishonest marketing, and we expressly distance ourselves from this type of misleading advertising.
